New name for Myanma Airways, planning to operate internationally

Myanma Airways, the state-owned company, will be renamed Myanmar National Airways, as it will once again fly to the sky, said civil servants on 10 December. It has also launched a corporateisation operation, which will be operated by the Union and the Ministry of Transport at gun times, and has updated various features such as the launch of a website to allow on-line reservations.

State-owned property will remain with the carrier, although it is run independently of the federal administration, Myanmar National Airlines CEO Capt. Than Tun said in preparatory comments at the disclosure on December 10. "This will allow us to build the carrier very differently than in the past with our own executive board," he said.

Cronan Enright, senior advisor to MNA partners Avia Solutions, said the project could potentially costs the federal administration $500 million over 7 to 8 years. The Myanmar National Airlines will increase its number of fleets from 10 to 26 with 10 Boeing 737 and 6 ATR72-600 planes arriving from mid 2015.

From" the beginning of next year" the carrier will be operating for the first timeframe in more than two years. Until 1993, Myanma Airways had been operating outside Myanmar when it was involved in the establishment of Myanmar Airways Internation. While the new carrier started to operate on the domestic markets, Myanma Airways concentrated on the domestic markets.

It follows its route until 1948, when it was opened as Union of Burma Airways. Later, it shifted its name to Burma Airways Corporation and in 1989 to Myanma Airways. Capt. Than Tun said Myanmar National Airways, now rebranded, will introduce a new domestic timetable on 15 December.

It has also endeavoured to modernize its customers, from the purchase of tickets to departure. Mr Tun said that the company will introduce a "fully computerized reservation and reservation system and a fully automated check-in and board-in procedure at the airport".
