Situated on the east shore of the Chindwin Riviera, about 80 leagues north west of Mandalay, Monywa is a favourite stopover on Irrawaddy cruise itineraries. Also known as the home of the second highest Buddha sculpture in the whole wide globe, the Laykyun Setkyar. Monywa has become an important trading centre for Burma's Indian business in recent years, thanks to its random riverfront position.
Since the Bagan era (9th-13th century) there has been a colony here, and it is said that the name Monywa (which means "cake village") originated when a typical Hungarian sovereign falls in touch with a regional cakeseller. The most famous (by far!) is the Laykyun Setkyar Buddha in Bodhi Tataung Cloister.
Constructed between 1995 and 2008 and 130 meters (427 feet) high, this shimmering gold-white monument is the second highest sculpture in the worid, surpassed only by China's 153-meter Spring Buddha sculpture. A huge lying Buddha lies at the foot of Laykyun Setkyar, and the building of an likewise solid seated Buddha is to begin shortly.
One of Monywa's remarkable attractions is the Mohnyin Thambuddhei Paya, a buddhistic sanctuary with a large, decorated stupa that resembles a brighter and sparkling Indonesian Borobudur. These are our favorites among the West's most popular Monywa B&B. Monywa's climate guide is ideal for your vacation plans.
