The French term moire ( "moiré") (in use since at least 1823) is derived from the former verse moireer, "to make an aqueous fabric by weave or pressing". Moireer is a variant of the term moouaire, which is an adaptation of the British term used since at least 1570.

Often artifacts of pictures created by various computer image and graphic technologies, such as half-tone image capture or chequered layer scan (the latter is a unique case of jagged image, as a subtle, evenly spaced image is underscanned). This moire effect also appears between translucent superimposed entities.

Unidimensional designs can occur when an obscure film containing minute horizontally translucent contours is placed over a film containing a complicated form that repeats itself intermittently along the axe.
