Cordoba Mosque Cathedral[1][2] (Spanish: Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba), also known as the Great Mosque of Córdoba[3][2][4] (Spanish: Mezquita de Córdoba) and the Mezquita,[5][6][7] whose ecclesial name is the Church of Our Lady of the Ascension (Spanish): Nuestra Señora de la Asunción),[8] is the Roman Cathedral of the diocese of Córdoba, in Andalucia. It is devoted to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is in Andalucia.

During the Umayyad rule in Spain (711-1031 AD) it was extended and turned into a shrine that was preserved for eight hundred years. This was where the Christian Visigoth Christian temple of San Vicente used to stand, but when the Moors came to the city in 758 AD, it was demolished and a religious shrine was built in its place.

It' s a common place in the story of Córdoba that in their early years in the town Muslims and Christians used to share the S. This was a decisive time in the development of Córdoba, which later on, perhaps, was underlined by a similarity between Córdoba and another Umayyad capitol, Damascus. Ibn Idh?r? in the 14th cent. mentioned for the first time the common use of the temple by Muslims. This could be a similar tale related to the Great Mosque in Damascus, perhaps long after the mosque was made.
