May Myo
And may MyoThe Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo)
Only a few cities in Myanmar recall a past period of English colonialism, such as the city of Pyin Oo Lwin, formerly known as Maymyo after Colonel May. Located at a chilly height of 1050 metres above sealevel, 69 kilometres from Mandalay, in the heart of the Shan hill country, the city is a popular tourist destination.
Small houses with fireplaces and well-kept lawns are located on the edge of the city; the Purcell Tower, a present from Queen Victoria, is the heart of the city; the Kandawgyi Gardes, a magnificent botanic park founded in 1915 by the spouses of English villagers and planters, is a great place to walk and have a nice glass of coffee.
Go on a city tour and from December to February savour a tasty infant, bio strawberry, a speciality of this mountain resort. It is something completely different to go to the Naung Cho hamlet and take the Mandalay-Lashio rail. It takes a 45-minute rail journey over the Gokteik Bridge, constructed by the American Pennsylvania Steel Co. in 1903, to the Naung Pan hamlet, over the 700-meter-long ravine at a top altitude of 300 metres.

Full days travel to Maymyo from Mandalay 2018
Join a colonial-style mountain terminal on a full-day personal journey from Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin or Maymyo and relish the colder rolling hills while exploring historical architectural features, chalk caverns and a picturesque falls. The 10-hour safari will include pick-up and drop-off at your Mandalay resort accommodation, lunches at a nearby dining establishment and all admission charges, as well as the personal adventure of a personal travel agent.
Begin your pick-up at 8am at your Mandalay resort before starting your two-hour journey to Pyin Oo Lwin in a privately owned vehicle. Arrive at the former mountain terminal, take a horse-drawn sleigh tour of the historical centre and have your cameras at your disposal to take pictures of the city's bustling marketplaces, botanic gardens and architectural colonialism.
Go to a basic luncheon place for a locally-styled luncheon, then head on to Peik Khyin Myaung Cave, where you'll find a row of crypts in the long limestone cave. The full days trip ends with the pick-up to Mandalay and your pick-up at your hostel.
