The MAI has a long international aviation tradition when it was established in 1993 as a JV between Myanma Airways and the Singapore based carrier. Operation of the international carrier did not undergo a radical transformation until 2010, when the KBZ Group introduced an industry and flight path transition period with an 80% stake in MAI.

Since January 2014 MAI is a 100% member of the KBZ Group, a privately held Myanmar National corporation, a Myanmar Civil Aviation Requirements & International Civil Aviation Organization member. MAI and Air France Industries concluded a contract in July 2012 for maintenance and engineering service, on-site engineering and components maintenance as well as on-site engineering supports.

A contract for the servicing of Airbus A320 aircraft was concluded in September 2012 with Sepang Aircraft Engineering, an EADS company. MAI entered into a codeshare and partner arrangement with Korea Air and Asiana Airlines in April 2013, a codeshare arrangement with Malaysia Airlines in January 2014 and a codeshare arrangement with Garuda Indonesia in November 2014.

The MAI is the sole beneficiary of the IATA Operational Safety Audit Program (IOSA) Operators in Myanmar. MAY was honored by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) with the 2014 ASEAN BUSINESS AWARDS as National Winner (Myanmar) for Most Admired ASEAN Enterprise, ASEAN Centricity. These aircrafts are managed by an international and highly qualified staff.

MAI is still able to guarantee 100% security and freedom from accidents in aeronautical engineering and in the flight logbook.
