WARNUNG - Fraud at the Mae sot/Myawaddy border crossing - Myanmar Forum

Part of the cause we were cheated is our own guilt, we've been traveling through Southeast Asia for 10 month now and usually the natives who are offering help are actually helping, trustworthy and real. We were just out of luck this year and it's in part our responsibility that we just put our faith in this fella.

It' a middle thirties Myanmar boy with a big scar/growth on his throat - don't dare put up with this one. But I just want to make sure other guys don't make the same mistakes, so if you see this bloke on the edge, don't confide in him and dual control when folks are offering you a prize for transportation.

The new treaty between the two states allows travellers crossing the Myawaddy-Mae Sot border to remain in Mae Sot for seven consecutive nights. This new treaty will enter into force on 1 October 2016. Burma's Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population, the Ministry of the Interior and the Royal Thai Immigration Service have reached an understanding on the renewal.

Previously, persons crossing the Myawaddy-Mae Sot border with their passport were permitted to spend a one-day stopover from 6 am to 6 pm. In order to maintain the border crossing, according to officials, they must hold the Burma NRC membership cards and must register 1,500 Kyats with Burma's migration authorities and 20 Bahets with Thailand's INS.

Passport holder are permitted to travel to Phop Phra and Mae Ramat districts in the Thai Mae Sot area. Crossing with their own vehicles, they pay 25,000 Kyat and are permitted to enter the city of Mae Sot, but are not permitted to go to Phop Phra or Mae Ramat.

Whilst there are many different types of individuals who are crossing the Thai-Burma Friendship Brigde to work in Mae Sot every day, there are many others who are crossing the border through several illicit passages under the one.
