It is a former capitol of Myanmar (Burma) and the capitol of the Yangon area. With almost six million inhabitants, Yangon is the largest city in the state and the most important trading center, although the army regime moved the official headquarters to Naypyidaw in March 2006. In the 16th century more than 10,000 buddhistic churches, couples and convents were built in the Bagan plain alone, of which the remnants of over 2200 couples and couples have been preserved to this date.
