TPP increases on TPP due to KNU's close trading links and struggles with the Myanmar government.

IMNA: Raw material costs on the Three Pagoda Pass (TPP) have increased due to the continuing battles between the Karen National Union (KNU) and Burma's military regimes. Most of the TPP inhabitants who work in plants on a day-to-day basis are under pressure from rising raw material costs and the closure of plants in the TPP area.

While TPP inhabitants used both Thailand and Burma foods before the battles began on November 8, Thailand's stamps are no longer available. Fights have had an impact on the price of foods, as two of the three trading lanes have been shut down under TPP. The Chaung Zone (Kyarinseikkyi) to TPP was shut down on 29 November to prepare an attack by Burma's Burma authorities against KNUs.

Exports of goods in this way have been halted, so that goods have already risen in prices at TPP due to their present shortage. "There have been rises in the prices of paddy, olive peel, bulbs, garlic, chilli, and msg. Unleavened bulbs and olive oils began to rise in December, with Thai coir rising from 30 to 55 Bahts of Thai coir and bulbs from 25 to 55 Baht," a TPP inhabitant commented.

With immediate effect, transport of Burma rugged and TPP inhabitants and everyday laborers are compelled to buy a more costly Thai rug. "The prices of olive and MSG, onions, cloves and other foods have risen and it is no longer worth selling Mohinga (Burmese type pasta )," said a Mohinga salesman at TPP.

The TPP used to offer job possibilities in the various plants on the Thai side, but the struggles have shut down many of these plants that make clothes and furnishings and leave the Burmese everyday laborers without wages in connection with higher grocery costs. Fewer plant employees have also led to a decline in profit for domestic grocers.
