The Khalifa Airways of Algeria has ordered 10 more ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft to extend its current three ATR 72-500 and four ATR 42 fleets. Headquartered in Algiers, the Italian subsidiary is planning to extend its home base and introduce new lines to neighbouring states. Europe's biggest ATR provider, Eurowings from Dortmund, has received the first of six ordered ATR 72-500, which are run on the German grid of its business partners Lufthansa.
The new Khalifa Airways becomes the newest member of the Boeing 777 family
Algiers, Algeria-based Khalifa Airways is the newest member of the Boeing 777 aircraft fleet and has signed a five-year contract with Boeing Aircraft Trading for the leasing of two 777-200 aircraft. Khalifa 777s are driven by GE90 powerplants and are due for shipment in November and December 2002.
Khalifa Airways' CEO Rafik Abdelmoumem Khelifa, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Alan MULALYLLY and Boeing Aircraft Trading President Dinesh Keskar took part in this landmark ceremony. When he met Khelifa, Mr Mally greeted the new 777 in person. "We' re very happy that one of the most rapidly expanding airline companies in Africa is part of our 777 family," said Mr Mulally.
"And we look forward to working with Khalifa Airways, which is further expanding its networks and improving its 777 jetliners. The new 777-200s will be used by Khalifa Airways to connect Algeria with various Africa, Europe and Trans-Atlantic routes. With 240 seating places - 22 in First and 70 in Busi-ness and the rest in Economical- the Khalifa 777 features the roomy, award-winning Boeing Signature Interior, which offers the highest level of seating on longer ICAO routes.
There are bigger luggage compartments in the interior, which can be opened downwards for easy cargo handling, and the high deck provides a more roomy and open area. The 777th International Air show, a poll of tens of thousands of long-haul travelers around the globe in first, second, and third class, showed an astonishing taste for the 777.
A global poll carried out in 1999 and 2000 showed that more than three out of four global travellers who flew both on board the 777 and rival planes favoured the Boeing 777. Airline companies have also made the 777 their favourite plane in its category. With 606 orders and more than 400 missions around the globe, the 777 is the best-selling airliner in its category.
