Kalaw, a modest rural city, has quickly developed into a touristic hot spot in the evolving Myanmar Buddha state.
Just 60 km from the city centre is the very beloved Inle Lake, where pictures of lonely fishermen walking on one foot while throwing net across the river and winding their other foot around an rudder to drift forward. With Myanmar rapidly opening up to tourists and the number of aliens arriving each months increasing at an exponential rate, the hike from Kalaw to Inle Lake is becoming more and more common.

The first view of the huge pond is memorable, as it juts out between thin-leaved plants like a gleaming looking glass that happens to stand on the hill.
After all, it is a wonderful sensation to start on a small, wooden skiff to the other end of Lake Inle. It is a worthwhile exercise to get to the scenic dam, especially when you think about the enchanting landscape you have crossed to get there. Native women put together a floral arrangements for a villager who died one evening while we were living in the neighboring farm.
