Ipoh' s position between Kuala Lumpur and George Town has made it an important inland junction within western Malaysia, with both the Malayan Railway's west coast line and the North-South express passing through the town. In addition to road transport, Ipoh is also serviced by Sultan Azlan Shah Airport.
From various tourist ratings and government agencies, Ipoh is known as Hipster Capital of Malaysia. In the 1880s, Ipoh emerged from the Malaysian hamlet of Palau on the bank of the Kinta River. In 1892 the Great Fire of Ipoh devastated more than half of the city, but also offered the possibility to reconstruct the city in an ordered order.
Later Ipoh was reconstructed in good order before the second storm of pewter and expanded quickly as a consequence of the boom in the pewter mine industries, especially in the twenties and thirties. In the early 1930', a Hakka mine, the Yau Tet Shin billionaire, began to develop a large part of the city, now known as "New Town", from the east banks of the Kinta River to Greentown.
In 1937 Ipoh became the capitol of Perak and replaces Taiping. The Ipoh has a temperate forest environment. Throughout the year Ipoh records high rainfall with an annual mean of 200 mm (7.9 in) rainfall per months and an annual mean of 2,427.9 mm (95.59 in) rainfall per year.
At the edge of Ipoh there are lime stone rocks. Further speleological sites in Ipoh are Ling Sen Tong, Nan Tian Tong, Kwan Yin Tong and Perak Tong. The Gua Tempurung, near Gopeng just South of Ipoh, is a show cavern open to the general public that is very much loved by speleologists. With more than 3 km length it is one of the longest caverns of the Malaysian peninsula.
The Ipoh has a pulsating grocery shopping community with an enormous spread of hangar centers and dining. Further well-known meals from Ipoh are "Hor Hee", shallow dumplings of pasta with fishballs and/or fishballs, "Nga Choi Kai" (Chinese: ???), hen with bean sprouts coated with pepper and bejasauce, "Kai Shi Hor Fun" (Chinese: "Kai Shi Hor Fun"):
In Malaysia, the town is known for its "Ipoh-Weißkaffee", in which the ground coffees are fried with hand held vegetable oils and the resulting coffees are prepared with evaporated water. And Ipoh is also known for its crisp fruit like pomelo, durian and seedless guava. Ipoh' early development as a colony was due to its coal mine industries, although it played second violin to Gopeng, about 19 km southwards.
Once Ipoh was one of the wealthiest towns in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, when pewter was still royal. In the 1980s, when pewter plummeted, Ipoh's business was particularly badly affected. Recently, however, the town has gained some dynamism. Until 2017, the town will open the first Movie Animations Theme Park (MAPS), which is the first in Southeast Asia.
There is a boom in tourist activity in the old part of Ipoh and many stores are transformed into a stylish cafe. Ipoh also hosts some large multinational enterprises. Berhad, a Malaysian firm which is also one of the 15 largest Malaysian firms in terms of turnover, has its head office in Ipoh.
KLK's largest stockholder, Batu Kawan Beread, an umbrella fund, is also headquartered in Malaysia. Headquartered in Ipoh, Hovid Beread is a pharmaceuticals firm that is also the first Malaysia-based generics importer abroad. Also Ipoh is known for its whitecoffee.
The old town of Bernad, a publicly traded grocery and drinks conglomerate specialising in making instant coffees, has its head office in Ipoh. In Ipoh there are several other publicly traded enterprises, such as Perak Transit Bernad, Tasek Cement Bernad, DKLS Industries Bernad, Wellcall Holding Bernad, Rubberex Bernad, Perak Corp., etc.
There are also some multinational corporations based in Malaysia. Several of the MNC' s abroad in Ipoh are, Finisar, Voith, ITL Asia-Pacific, Sagami Manufacturers, etc.. Old town lies westward of the Kinta River. Further remarkable characteristics are: The nickname of the neoclassical/Edwardian Baroque Ipoh train stop is "Taj Mahal of Ipoh".
The Ipoh Town Hall, an Edwardian baroque city hall opposite the railway station. Ipoh or Padang Ipoh is situated on Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam area. Built around historical classically architecturally designed houses such as the Ipoh Club in Mock-Tudor styles, the FMS Bar, the HSBC House, and St. Michael's Institutional Secondary School, the campus is set in a natural setting with a rich history of history.
Ipoh, formally known as SMK Methodist (ACS), is situated along the Lahat Road. The Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Anderson is the most famous junior high education institution with more than 100 years of experience, situated next to the General Hospital of Ipoh. It has produced a number of figurines in the area. St. Michael's Institution, Ipoh, is a publicly funded primary education institution in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.
Muzzium Darul Ridzuan is a historic Perak Musuem, housed in a rather former manor house of a pewter mine pycoon on Jalan Kuala Kangsar. The Concubine lane or better known as Yi Lai Hong in Cantonese is a small and small alley in front of Jalan Bandar Timah (Leech Street) in the old town of Ipoh. Mural paintings by Ipoh, painted by gifted road performers, bring new vitality to the old town of Ipoh.

The Birch Memorial Clock Tower is a beloved historic monument situated near the Ipoh State Mosque or generally known as the Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque.
It was erected to honour the memory of James W. W. Birch, the first inhabitant of Perak in Britain, who was murdered in Pasir Salak on 2 November 1875. Neustadt, the new town on the eastern side of the Kinta River, was founded around 1908 by Yau Tet Shin. In Neustadt there are among others the Perak Medical University and the town hall of Ipoh.
D. R. Seenivasagam Park (Coronation Park), situated in the centre of Ipoh (New Town), is known for its beautiful scenery and leisure activities. The Royal Perak Club in front of the Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (Tiger Lane), the Meru Club in Jelapang and the Clearwater Sanctuary Club on the way to Batu Gajah are the best places for playing the game.
Further sport facilities are the Kilat Club in Pasir Pinji, Ipoh field (Padang Ipoh) in the old town, the Polo area and the Iskandar Polo Club in Ampang Baru. Azlan Shah Cup is an annually organized men's arena ice hockey in Ipoh. At Ipoh, we have a fully featured sport facility called Kompleks Sukan MBI or MBI Sporting Complex.
The Perak Stadium or the Perak Stadium belong to the institutions within the complex. The Perak Stadium is home to Perak The Bos Gaurus, who plays in the Malaysia Super League. Ipoh derives its name from a small indigenous plant, Pohon Epu, better known today as Pokok Ipoh. Ipoh''s old route links Ipoh with other big Malaysian peninsula capitals such as Alor Setar, Taiping and Penang in the northern part and Tapah, Kuala Lumpur, Seremban and even Johor Bahru in the southern part.
Drivers from the eastern seaboard can use the Gerik Hwy to the west of Perak or Cameron Highlands. Coach: The intercity coach station is situated at the integrated Amanjaya coach station in Bandar Meru Raya, just north of the town. Aerial: The Sultan Azlan Shah is the only airfield in Ipoh.
