About Hpa An (Pa An) Information

Hpa An, the main city of Karen State, is a scenic city with a backpacking feeling, located on the easterly shore of the Thanlwin (Salween), about 270 kilometers eastwards of Yangon. Surroundings, surrounded cave and mountain and relaxed ambience are the region's highlight.

The Hpa An (sometimes also called Pa-An and Pah-Ann) is surrounded by a spectacular karstic range that protrudes from the nearby plain, and many of these peaks contain large and religionally significant caverns (more detail further down this page). Unfortunately, there have been several open-cast mines in the area that have permanently damaged this singular countryside - but there is still much to be enjoyed, and the most striking example is the pretty, holy and monumental Zwegabin hill (sometimes also called Zwekabin), which is located 16 kilometers southeast of Hpa An.

You have a wonderful view of Zwegabin from the beautiful Kan Thar Yar See (15 minutes on foot from the center of Hpa An) and from a beautiful brewery stop just south of Hpa An on the street to Madlamyine (500 meters southwards of the Hotel Zwegabin). Zaydan Rd. in downtown Hpa An offers a range of tea houses and dining facilities with a menu in various languages that serve traditional and Oriental dishes, and at sundown it is a good idea to drive to Strand Rd. to take a look at the Thanlwin Rd. There is a snack bar selling beers and beverages near the boat return point from Maylamyine.

A larger choice of pictures of Hpa An and its surroundings (including the caves) can be found in our Hpa An picture-book. When you want to ascend the Zwegabin, there are stairs to the summit, but it's tough work, especially in the hot - and the stairs are repaired to different extents!

There is a characteristic convent and peak tops, a marvellous cafeteria offering great (and usually well-deserved!) meals and exceptional vistas of the peak. For the walk to Zwegabin a charge of 3,000 K is levied, which is to be paid at the entry.

Watch our YouTube movie of the way to Zwegabin and visit our Zwegabin picture gallery for a larger choice of pictures. Twenty-two kilometers southeast of Hpa An is the breathtaking Sadan Cave, which opens into a giant cave with Buddhas and palagodas and can be traversed to the other side, under the Mt.

Watch our YouTube videos from the Sadan Grotto entry and drive back to Sadangrot. Near Hpa An are the Kaw Ka Taung caverns and the pools; the bathing area provides the possibility to relax and chill after a full exploration of the area and provides a wonderful view of the nearby paddy fields and hills (although it is very much loved by locals).

A number of excellent Thai and locally cuisine can be found here, and it is possible to go by kayak in the nearby rice paddies, with a guide to the villages - see the "Travel Hub" section below for more information. There are other caverns in the area, Yathaypyan and Kawgun, located on the western side of the Thanlwin stream; all of them are scenic and have a high level of sacred and historic value (details are in English at the entrance to the caves).

Just southwards of Hpa An, on the way to Zwegabin, lies the Kyauk Kalap - a truly singular pit, which lies on an uncommon cliff formations in the midst of an (artificial) sea. It' a wonderful place and another one that provides great photography of Zwegabin mountain.
