Myanmar Government Ministry of the Office of the Council of State Press Release
The Ministry of the Council of State published the following declaration of 25 January 2018. Under the chairmanship of Professor Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Thailand, the Advisory Committee for the Realisation of the Rakhine State Recommendations held a meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on 22 and 23 January 2018.
On January 22, the Board of Directors held meetings with State Councillor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and on January 23 with Vice President U Myint Swe. It was informed of the state of work on 23 January by the Chairman of the Committee for the Follow-up of the Recommendations on Rakhine State, the Minister of the Union for Social Affairs, Assistance and Resettlement, Dr Win Myat Aye, and the Union Ministers involved.
From 24 to 25 January, the Board had the chance to tour Rakhine State to see the current status at first-hand, and to engage with community. It is the Government's commitment to implement the Rakhine State Advisory Commission's proposals as far as possible and in the minimum possible amount of delay, depending on the current circumstances on the spot.
For this reason, it has appointed the Committee for the Realisation of the Rakhine State Recommendation and formed the Advisory Council from seasoned individuals to consult independently and openly. During the discussion in Nay Pyi Taw on 22 January it became clear that the intention of Governor Bill Richardson, a member of the Executive Committee, was not to give advices on the basis of the Rakhine State Consultative Commission's recommendation, under the chairmanship of Dr. Kofi Annan, but to follow his own diary.
Given the emerging differences of views, the government ruled that his further involvement on the Board was not in the best interests of all parties.
