Flower City Myanmar

Floral City Myanmar

Flower city of the mountains. Myanmar: Flower city of the mountain At 5am I reached the Pyin Oo Lwin central station, the colder one I had felt for a long while. Yangon's tropic climate had confused my senses: The night before I had worn a sundress and wondered if I had enough hot clothing for the cold night.

Formerly Pyin Oo Lwin was Maymyo, which means "Maistadt" to Colonel May, who was provisionally based there in 1887. Situated elsewhere in Myanmar, the British Raj's summers capitol, Pyin Oo Lwin is surrounded by large, albeit slightly decayed colonial-style villas.

It is still surrounded by large, big elm tree shapes, reminding us of Europe's elm tree, which promises luxuriant shadows in the heats. Early in the afternoon, when I came back to my guest house, I had the easy joy of find a peaceful place to study in the yard under the soft rays of the summerlight. Something I can't do in the busy, warm Yangon, where parks are rarely found in the city centre.

I have often described Pyin Oo Lwin as an old mountain terminal, but it is really very shallow and lies on a platform about 1000m above selev. Pyin Oo Lwin's fame as a flower city is lent by the parks. is one of the best 100% Arabica coffeemakers in Myanmar.

In Pyin Oo Lwin I had a remarkable good meal: The Shan pasta at the San Franciso Cafe near my guest house was delicious. In the Golden Triangle Cafe, which is situated on the central street in a cinema from the former Colonies, you can even find French-style bagsuettes and great pizzas. Feel Cafe, opposite the city' s course, offers an exquisite selection of dishes from all over Myanmar.

The quaint restaurant, belonging to the city' s burgomaster, U Soe Myint (among other Pyin Oo Lwin establishments and restaurants), has been transformed into furnishings using recyclable material; a bath tub has been transformed into a dinner bar with an interior fishing basin. I find the water falls and forests surrounding Pyin Oo Lwin the most attractive thing about the area.

The city of Pyin Oo Lwin is a great city with great promise. It has also been honored with the ASEAN Sustainable Cities Award 2011 for cleaner urban environments. Further projects to make the city a goal - in fact it is only a two hours ride to Mandalay and is the major stop on the Mandalay-Lashio street.

From Yangon to Pyin Oo Lwin: - A coach ride lasts about 10 hrs over night. - Or take a collective cab from Yangon to Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin (they drive every hour and collect you from your hotels and bring you to your destinations - cost K6,000 for foreigners).
