Pyin-Oo-Lwin (Maymyo) - Why is unique? The small city of Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo), founded by the Brits as a place of refuge before the high temperature of spring, still has a strongly anglicised feeling. Kolonialism in the city can be dated back to the end of the nineteenth century, when the Brits came after the capture of Mandalay at the end of the Third Burmese War.
After Colonal May, the commandant of the position and vet of the mutiny, the name of the city was changed to Maymyo (May Town). 1896 a standing army base was set up in the city, which later became a mountain base and the UK government's holiday home in Myanmar (the Brits called it Burma) due to colder weather.
Pyin Oo Lwin was also an important education center during Britain's reign, where the English high schools of the ruling class such as St. Albert's, St. Joseph's Convent, St. Mary's, St. Michael's and Colgate are located. In 1989 Maymyo was re-named Pyin Oo Lwin when the UK authorities handed over kolonial title to the Myanmar name before Britain ruled.
So what to discover at Pyin-Oo-Lwin (Maymyo)? The Pyin Oo Lwin is about 70 kilometres (2 hour drive) from Mandalay to the Shan Plateau at an elevation of over 1000 metres above sealevel. The city is home to several native inhabitants of Nepal whose forefathers came there during English times.
It is known as a horticultural city because it cultivates different types of plants. Kaffeeplantagen are around Pyin Oo Lwin. It is a point of passage on the former "Burma Road", which runs via Lashio to Muse and the Chinese border. This is a beautiful and verdant park that extends over a large area on the edge of Pyin Oo Lwin.
There' two cascades in the city. After about 1.5 hrs (almost 300 m altitude) you can descend through a gorge with dense vegetation on a small and partly precipitous trail. The Peik Chin Myaung Grotto is about 45 min. from Pyin Oo Lwin towards Lashio, a dripstone grotto with many small Buddha pictures.
Many old Tudor and Victorian houses are still to be seen in the city. Formerly the Candacraig is one of the most beautiful hotels, today a state-run resort in a large complex. Actually, the city is quite big, outside the city centre it is easily developed. It' re rewarding to drive through the city and enjoy it.
In contrast to chariots in other places in Myanmar, the cabs of the chariots in Pyin Oo Lwin are enclosed, as one would have expected in an old West film. Pyin-Oo-Lwin (Maymyo), how do you get there? There are two possibilities from Mandalay International Airport: Either you rent a cab (His Myanmar or Seven Diamond are best) directly to Pyin Oo Lwin (costs about 35,000 kyats); or you take a cab to Mandalay (Shwe Myanmar has a booth at the arrivals hall of the international airports - $4 per person) to the Pyin Oo Lwin stop.
It will take about 1.5 hour for the first hour, and about 2.5 hour for the second. It is also possible to travel from Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin by rail (5 hours), plane by plane (less than 2 hours) or even by Hilux pick-up (3 hour, inexpensive, smelly and inconvenient). Booking trains and travelcards can only be purchased at Mandalay station.
