Obtaining the Myanmar Visas at the Bangkok Embassy
Myanmar was one of the South East Asia lands we knew we absolutely wanted to see on our journey. It was not known when we would get the visas and how we would enter and leave the EU due to the opening of the countryside and the continuous changes.
Prior to the start of the quest we reviewed it and the reality is that the picture hasn't improved in the last few month. They can reach the island by road from Thailand or with a specific permission from India or China. Though in none of the cases can you apply for a frontier visas.
Bangladesh's borders are open to visitors, and Laos, although it divides part of the frontier, has no frontier overpass. Fill in the documents at the embassy. It is easy to get the eVisa on-line, but it will only give you entry to Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon Airport.
Visas are $50 for 28 consecutive 28-day periods, which can be used within three month of the date of issue of the permit. When in Bangkok, you can go to the embassy of Myanmar (Sathorn Nua Road, 132) and do it there directly. Visas are exactly the same.
For 28 countries during three month from the date of issue. When you eventually choose to do it in the embassy as I have done it, here I let you some information that may be useful. Myanmar Union embassy opens twice a daily. The application for the visas is open between 9.00 and 12.00 and can be picked up from half past two to half past two.
Links the shortlist of public holiday in Thailand and Myanmar. To the right, above the receipts you will receive after payment and the timetable of the embassy. If you are applying for a visas, take your pass, two photographs and a copy of your pass, which you can take with you if you do not have it.
If you hand in the documents and the application you have to cover the costs of the visas. Costs vary depending on how quickly you want your pass back. When you want it the same evening, it costs you 1.260THB (~ 38 USD). After all if you are not in a rush, you can get it two and a half working hours later and will be charged 800THB, as we said.
They must also think that only the days of the week (Monday to Friday) are counted and that the embassy is closed on public days from both Thailand and Myanmar. The prices of the different types of visa are available at the embassy. And, by the way, don't loose this voucher if you want to see your pass again!
We were more scared of when we requested the visas because we wanted to go by road without really realizing on what date we would arrive or depart the state or where we would be, they thought it was a problem and the visas would not be accept.
When they returned to get the passes, still a little anxious, they gave them back with the authorized visas and we got a sheet of papers, the workers said, because of the "incomplete documentation". It has been said that when they enter the land to make a plane trip back, a room booking or to show if we have enough for them.
They asked us if we were in a lot of troubles at the frontier because of all that, and they said no, that it is never asked there, but it is usually at the airfield. So it was, just a few day later we traversed the Mae Sot - Myawaddy frontier and they punched us an immigration postmark without asking any questions.
When you pass the town just to get the visas, or if you want to stay as near as possible to the embassy, you should check: It is only 300 metres from the embassy of Myanmar!
