Only a few of today's structures date from the time before the long siege of the sixteenth centuary, when the mediaeval defensive structures were largely demolished by bombardments with ordnance. Noteworthy are the early twelfth c. St. Margaret's Chapel, considered the oldest structure in Edinburgh,[3] the Royal Palace and the Great Hall from the early sixteenth cent.

It also hosts the Scotland insignia known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scotish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland. of the castle, although his present is now largely formal and bureaucratic.

Several of the castle complexes are home to regiment monuments, which help to present them as a touristic destination.
