Myanmar and Cambodia tour companies are confident that a new direct air travel between the two nations will promote the growth of their tourist sectors. On 23 February, Myanmar Airways International (MAI) launched its twice-weekly liner shipping services between Yangon and Siem Reap, while Air Bagan has long been keen to join the domestic airline.
Important employees of the tourist sector from Myanmar and Cambodia were in agreement that the direct flights would be advantageous for both sides. "For the tourist sector, the flight between Yangon and Siem Reap is very, very important and also for the economies of both countries," Ang Kim Eang, Cambodian travel agency association chairman and director of Phnom Penh-based Great Angkor Tours said to the Myanmar Times last months.
Myanmar has a lot to do for Cambodian and foreigners. Aung Myat Kyaw, MD, Chair of the Myanmar Marketing Committee, said Myanmar attracts some of the million visitors to Angkor Wat near Siem Reap every year. However, Mr Han Rutten, Cambodia's Intra Travel Executive, warned that direct services must be encouraged in order to have a significant influence on the evolution of this area.
"This direct flight is a very good option for travellers who want to move between Cambodia and Myanmar," he said. "This flight connection can help travelers to Myanmar by saving a great deal of cash, as they do not have to leave Bangkok as before. After Siem Reap to Yangon, then to Yangon and from Yangon to Bangkok as a sightseeing flight.
The Siem Reap-Yangon-Bangkok Trip could be a favorite with travelers from around the world. "It will be great if the number of flights on the flight routes rises to three flights a weeks from October and I am hoping that it will be simpler to get a Myanmar permit in the near future," he said. Kah Hock Traveller and Tours' Director of Mission in Phnom Penh, Ma Ei Thwe Aung, said the ministry has the capacity to get Myanmar back on many Southeast Asian routes.
"This will help to shape the choices of foreign travelers traveling to Southeast Asia. It is also important to support Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar as a single Destinations. However, Myanmar needs to spend more on tourist infrastructures and people," she said. It said that the Myanmar enterprise would support Myanmar as a pilgrim goal for older travelers and as a culture goal for the younger population.
Myanmar agencies said that interest in Cambodia has increased immediately with the launch of flights. "We' ve had many requests for programmes from Siem Reap. We' re going to offer a four-day tour to Siem Reap this month," said Ko Lynn Zaw Wai Mang, Executive Directors of Unique Asia Travels and Tours in Yangon.
Mandalay Inn in Siem Reap owned Ko Mange Maung Myo Thaung said MAI needed to increase advertising in Cambodia and work more effectively with Kyrgyz tourist businesses to inform them not only about air travel but also about visas for Siem Reapers.
