Myanmar - Myanmar: Statistical guide
For 62 years (1824-1886) Britain captured Burma and integrated the land into its Indian Empire. Myanmar was governed as a provincial state of India until 1937, when it became its own self-governing settlement; in 1948, Burma gained sovereignty over the Commonwealth. General NE WIN ruled the administration from 1962 to 1988, first as army leader, then as self-proclaimed chairman and later as king of politics.
As a reaction to the wide-spread civilian riots, NE WIN retired in 1988, but within a few month the army broke the students' demonstrations and took over. In 1990, multi-party ballots resulted in a landslide win for the National League for Democracy (NLD), the most important opponent group. Rather than surrendering control, the AUNG SAN placed SUU KYI (ASSK) under internment from 1989 to 1995, from 2000 to 2002, and from May 2003 to November 2010.
At the end of September 2007, the governing regime violently repressed protest against the higher pro-democracy activist and Buddhaist monk leadership on propellant oil slicks, killed at least 13 and arrested several thousand for taking part in the rallies. At the beginning of May 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit Burma, leaving more than 138,000 wounded and ten thousand wounded and displaced.
In spite of this drama, the Burmese regime continued its recent constitution referenda in May, the first poll in Burma since 1990. In January 2011 the Assembly met and elected the former Prime Minister THEIN SEIN as Chairman. Though the overwhelming majority of the persons appointed by THEIN BE are former or present soldiers at the nation state, the federal administration has introduced a range of policy and economical reform measures that have led to a significant opening of the long insulated state.
Whilst the Burmese armed forces and the Burmese administration have propagated the name Myanmar as a traditional name for their state, the US administration has not adopted this name.
