There are three seasonal climates - summers (March to mid-May), rain (mid-May to mid-October) and winters (mid-October to February). The prevailing winds are typical southwest from March to mid-October, northeast from mid-October to February. In June, July and August the air moisture levels reach 90% and fall to a low of about 50% in February.
The Andaman Ditch in the Bay of Bengal in western Myanmar is where the Indian Plaque moves northwards and below the Burma Plaque, while in the eastern part the Tagaing Rift forms the border between the Burma Plaque and the Sunda Plaque. The Yangon region has therefore experienced more than sixteen 7.0+ magnitude quakes over the years.
Researchers cannot predict major quakes, but Myanmar Engineering Society has been reported ly predicting a major quake in the Yangon area over the next 20 years. Because of the geography of the Yangon River and the Yangas River, the risks of a Yangon tidal wave are relatively low.
Cyklons that originate in the Bay of Bengal usually begin to move westward towards India and then north-east towards Bangladesh and Myanmar. Whereas cyclone rarely reaches the Myanmar coastline, cyclone Nargis hit Dala, Twantay, Htantabin and Hlegu most severely in the entire Ayeyarwady - Yangon region in May 2008.

Burma's climate is typical of the tropics; overcast, wet, warm and moist (southwest monsoons, June to September); less cloudiness, little rain, moderate temperature, lower air moisture in winters (north-east monsoons, December to April).
