The Cathay Pacific Airways Limited is the airline of Hong Kong with its headquarters and headquarters at Hong Kong International Airport. The Cathay Pacific company owns a large capacity jet pool of Airbus A330s, Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s. 5 ] Cathay Pacific Cargo runs two Boeing 747s.

Cathay Dragon, a fully owned Hong Kong based company, serves 44 Asian-Pacific countries. Cathay Pacific and Cathay Pacific Cargo together with Dragonair (renamed Cathay Dragon) transported almost 27 million and more than 1 million air cargo passenger. The Cathay Pacific company Cathay Dragon is a member of Oneworld.

The Cathay Pacific Airways was established in Hong Kong on 24 September 1946 with Sydney de Kantzow, Roy Farrell,[11][12][13], Neil Buchanan, Donald Brittan Evans and Robert "Bob" Stanley Russell as the first stockholders. 12 ] Buchanan and Russell already worked for de Kantzow and Farrell in the forerunner company of Cathay Pacific, Roy Farrell Import-Export Company,[14][13][15], which was originally based in Shanghai.

It started in January 1946 with two DC-3s between Australia and China (its first merchant plane was a delivery of clothing from Sydney to Shanghai), but the lucrative deal soon caught the interest of Chinese civil servants. Following several cases in which the company's aircraft were held by the Shanghai administration, the airline moved on 11 May 1946 and flew its two aircraft to Hong Kong.

Farrell and de Kantzow newly entered Hong Kong on 24 September 1946 under the name "Cathay Pacific Airways Limited". 11 ][12] They titled it Cathay, the old repute assumption China and the Pacific because Farrell gambled that one era they would be deed across the Pacific (what happend in the 1970s).

It comes from a Chinese diiom that means "big and tranquil state"[19] and was often referred to as "Cathay" by other companies at that age. In the 2000s, Cathay Pacific experienced industrial relationship problems while the Dragonair takeover was completed. As of 11 November 2009, 18 of the 49er were successful in the Hong Kong Court of First Instance in common actions for infringement, violation of the Employment Regulation and slander.

With regard to the Employment Regulation, an important element was that the ruling set the extent of "trade unions " activity and its level of worker safety in Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific did not appeal the Court of Appeal's ruling to confirm the judge's initial ruling that Cathay Executives' testimony was libellous to the Claimants.

Cathay Pacific also acquired several new airliner models, such as the Airbus A330-300 and the Boeing 777-300 ER[65] Tony Tyler retired from his role as Chief Executive Officer of the company on March 31, 2010 to continue his new role at IATA. 66] The New Zealand Trade Commission had also dismissed the charge against Cathay Pacific over freight price-fixing.

Cathay Pacific Group holds interests in the following companies: Before 1997, all Cathay Pacific planes were flying the UK banner on the tail unit. Upon delivery, the Hong Kong brand and HONG KONG or ?? in Chinese under or next to the Hong Kong brand logos instead of using the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) flags.
