Somebody stop Burma's hardline Buddhist monks?

By Burmese Rakhine's own admission, who has experienced his part of the drama, the violent events of the last two week have been shocking. On August 25, militias of the stateless Islamic Rohingya minorities attacked policemen. Assaults have claimed at least a dozen Burmese members of the Burmese military and led to collisions that have led to the death of some 400 of them.

Burma's army says most of the deceased are Rohingya rebels, but Rohingya campaigners are countering that civil victims are in high demand. Over 140,000 Rohingya returnees have escaped to neighbouring Bangladesh. "A Rohingya campaigner told me this weekend that all the other towns have already burned down. "More than 10,000 Rakhine Buddhists have been expelled from the country.

However, for hard-line nationalist Buddhists, this may be a blessing in that it supports their adverse image of the country's Islamic population. A group of ultra-nationalist Buddhaist friars, Ma Ba Tha, can already be seen in her daily Aung Zay Yatu with the slogan "Race and Religion Must Exist Until the World Ends".

"The Burmese administration has insisted that the Rohingya come from Bangladesh and is calling them Bengali. Ma Ba Tha's Wirathu was banned from sermons for one year in March after thanking the men who had murdered a high-ranking Islamic counselor in Yangon and after saying to the Buddhist woman that it would be better to wed a dog than a Moslem.

A state-sponsored Buddhist sangha council said Ma Ba Tha was not a legitimate organisation and ordered her to remove her Sign. The Sunday after the August raids in Rakhine, he performed at a demonstration in front of Yangon City Hall. "We went to some high school in Maungdaw and we didn't see any of our ethnical groups in those schools," he said, referencing one of the three capitals in the north of Rakhine State that were affected by the clash.

Who will the rest of the planet know who the plurality or who the minorities are when they see this? "National Buddhistism and worship in Burma has been going on since the colonization of Britain and into the stony post-independence years of 1948. The Rohingya groups have been fighting for more self-sufficiency in Rakhine for many years.

However, these pressures entered a new stage after 2011, when after many years of armed domination the state began to open up to the outside and the sense of insecurity about the fate of Buddhism in a rapidly evolving society became more evident. Only about 4 per cent of the 53 million inhabitants of the land are Muslims, and the Rohingya belong to this group.

However Rakhine State is fueling vital fear throughout the country, while the Rohingya are focused in this area, with more than 1. 1 million there. This state is regarded as the "western gateway" behind which Muslim South Asia and global Islam are waiting. The first thing Suu Kyi did after taking up her post in 2016, following the election that took place a few weeks before the end of decade-long army government, was to set up a committee under the leadership of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to make proposals to resolve the dispute.

However, less than two month after announcing the message, the group known as the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army first attacked and started by slaying nine officers at frontier stations, causing confrontations that resulted in the deaths of tens, forcing almost 90,000 to Bangladesh. "It has put the perceptible threats of violence in Islam at the top of the nation's minds and the anti-Muslim mood," writes the report's writers, quoting increasing tension in Yangon's neighbourhoods with large population.

There were two Islamic protesters and a robbery at noon of a building alleged to contain "Bengalis" from the state of Rakhine. However, hour after she gave her closing statement to the press at a chic Yangon resort on 24 August, the latest ARSA raids continued.

Rakhine has even seduced the Holy Father. On several occasions he talked about the hardship of the Rohingya, but did not pay much heed to the people. Hardliner Buddhists have warned the Holy Father not to use the journey to support the Rohingya. The Burmese diocesan priests have also asked him to refrain from using the term "Rohingya".

" Mariano Soe Aung, a spokesperson for the journey, recently said to me that this is not an formal politics, and they cannot tell the Holy Father what to say. At least at the present time it seems that no one can tell the hard-line Buddhist what they have to say.
