We have been thinking long and hard about our 10 most important sights in Burma: Inle Lake, the Irrawaddy River, the Temple of Bagan, Rangoon.... Echos of a past colonial period immortalized in the works of Kipling and Orwell. It is Burma (Myanmar) - a magic country with gold peagodas, top stops, indigenous communities, streams, mountain chains and breathtaking sands.
Walk idle through the lively and busy alleys of Rangoon city centre and the dilapidated sophistication of the UK city' s historic monuments, then head to the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda, a giant gold Buddha istupa dominating the Rangoon city centre skies. Inle Lake's Intha River with the Long Taxi Boot and see the Phaung Daw Oo Festival in October.
Admire during this four days party several hundred differently formed, gigantic ballons of papers, which are adorned with lamp candles at noon. Ngapali Beach's blue water offers a wealth of gastronomic treasures and some of the best dishes in the land are served in town.
Trekking to the eastern hill around Keng Tung to encounter several different cultural races, including the Lahu, Akha, Lisu, Enn, Palaung, Wa and Shan, each with their own ceremony and ritual, clothes and ornaments. During the Thingyan is the Thingyan Summer Festival in mid-April with four or five nights of songs, dance, music, procession and celebrations - and tossing waters - and culminates in the Burmese New Year.
From Sittwe, drive up the Kaladan to discover the antique town of Mrauk U, an archeological jewel with its deserted churches and ruined palaces. The noncompetitive Chinlone match is performed by basketball hockey fans from all over the land in a month-long summer competition at the Mahamuni Pagoda Grounds, Mandalay.
