Irrawaddy is the longest Myanmar stream that runs from south to north and originates in the Kachin at the junction of N'mai and Mali. In the past, the Irrawaddy was still used as the major traffic artery and you can see regular boats with heaps of tea wood.
Prior to the use of motor ships, the local people tied the pieces of wood into a large rack and drove down the rivers. Irrawaddy Rivers links the famed towns of Mandalay and Bagan with Yangon, the biggest and most important national and global crossroad. Myanmar's second biggest town, Mandalay was the former king's capitol.
Chindwin is the biggest affluent of the Irrawaddy and rises in Kachin State of Myanmar and heads southward before it meets the Irrawaddy Rivier. Because of the low level of the waters, the Chindwin is only open to large riverboats during the end of July and August monsoons, making it a much less researched area.
Because of the smaller number of vessels and tourists, the areas around the Chindwin are quiet and untouched. The majority of the stream passes through wonderful scenery that flows through mountains and thick woods.
