It is an old town in the Mandalay region of Myanmar (Burmese: ????; MLCTS: pu. game, IPA:[b??à?]; formerly Pagan). In the 16th century more than 10,000 buddhistic churches, couples and convents were built in the Bagan plain alone, of which the remnants of over 2,200 couples and couples have been preserved to this date.
Bagan's affluent industry had over 10,000 shrines under construction between the eleventh and thirteenth century. Between 1044 and 1287 Bagan was the capitol and the pagan empire's centre of politics, economics and culture. Most of the more than 300,000 foreign visitors in 2011 are also said to have been to Bagan. A number of Myanmar newspapers point out that the small tourist facilities in the town need to be developed quickly in order to achieve a moderate upturn in the following years. A severe quake struck Burma on August 24, 2016, once again causing great destruction in Bagan, this year destroying nearly 400 Buddhist cults.
Sulamani and Myauk Guni (North Guni) were badly affected. With the help of UNESCO specialists, the archaeological department of Bagan has begun a surveying and restoration. Bagan Archaeological Zone, the 13 x 8 km area around Old Bagan, comprising Nyaung U in the N and New Bagan in the South, is located in the wide plain of Upper Burma at the turn of the Irrawaddy Creek.
Situated 290 kilometers southwest of Mandalay and 700 kilometers northern of Yangon. It' s co-ordinates are 21°10' N and 94°52' E. The Bagan area is situated in the heart of Burma's "dry zone", the area for example between Shwebo in the northern part and Pyay in the southern part.

You can reach Bagan by plane, train, coach, automobile and small canoe. Nyaung U Airport is the gate to the Bagan area. A number of local carriers offer scheduled services to Yangon, which take about 80 min to travel the 600km. The flight to Mandalay takes about 30 min. and to Heho about 40 min.
Situated on the edge of Nyaung U, the nearest international airports are about 20 min. away by cab. There is an expressway-boat between Bagan and Mandalay. After Irrawaddy riverbank, the quickest boat will take about 9 hrs to drive the 170 km. Bagan's economic activity is mainly driven by the tourist industry.
Due to the boycott against the former army regime, the Bagan region's touristic infrastructures are still quite poor by comparison internationally. It is also the centre of Burma's paint industries, which depend to a large extent on touristic demands. Bagan's peak populations are thought to be between 50,000 and 200,000.
33 ] Until the emergence of the tourist industries in the 1990' only a few village inhabitants were living in Old Bagan. As Alt-Bagan is no longer approved for long-term housing, the majority of the local people live either in Neu-Bagan, just to the south of Alt-Bagan, or in Nyaung-U, just North of Alt-Bagan. Bagan Archeological Area is part of Nyaung-U District, Mandalay Region.
