The Andong ( [Korean pronunciation:[an. do?]) is a town in South Korea and the main town of the province of Nordgyeongsang. The Andong is a commercial center for the neighboring farming areas. Andong has been developing at a rapid pace since the seventies, although the populace has declined by nearly seventy thousand as displaced persons have migrated to Seoul and other metropolitan areas.

It became a tourist and artistic center in the nineties and early nineties. The Andong is known as a center of civilization and popular tradition. Surroundings are full of old tradition, so the Andong folk festival takes place every year in mid-October. Among the most well-known features of these festivals are the Andong mask.

The Andong National University, which specializes in educational and folk arts, has been growing strongly since the seventies. Further third level facilities are the Andong Science College and the Catholic Sangji College. About 1 B.C. Andong was established by the Jinhan, and it was known under the name Gochang. Gochang's battle in 930 was conducted here between the Hubaekje Force and the Goryeo military under the leadership of Wanggeon, who took over the town and changed its name to Andong.

When the Joseon family ascended to the crown of Korea, Andong became a center of Confucianism. For a long period the area was highly Conservative and brought forth many eminent scientists of Confucius. Yi Hwang (1501-70), one of the most famous of all Koreans, came from Andong. Later in his career, Yi Hwang withdrew to his home country and began to found the great Dosan Seowon confucian art school, which ended after his deaths.

Andong and his main relatives were powerful in the Koreas during this time, the three remarkable ones being the Andong Kim, Andong Jang and Andong Kwon Clan. Andong became less powerful after the sixteenth and sixteenth centuries, until the beginning of the nineteenth centuries, when a Kim married couple had a powerful impact on the kin.

During the Korean War in the early 1950', the Battle of Andong, Andong was the site of intensive battles. The Andong Dam was constructed in 1976 and provides the town with a dependable power supply. 1 ] In the Volksdorfmuseum Hahoe there is an exhibition devoted to this historical visitor.

Hahoe Folk Villages is perhaps the most remarkable people' settlement in Korea. In 2010 this town was declared a World Heritage Site of the Yangdong folk country by the GOK and UNESCO. It is also home to Konfucian study and academic institutions during the Joseon Dynasty.

Remarkable instances of either season or the Confucian Accademia are Dosan Hwang, who worships Yi Hwang, Byeongsan Hwon for Yu Seong-ryong, Imcheon Hwon for Kim Seong-il, Gosan Hwon, Hwacheon and others. Sisadan, Jirye Artists' Colony, Bongjeongsa Tempel and Andong Icheondong Seokbulsang and Jebiwon Stone Buddha are other remarkable tourist attractions.
