The AKA was a UK based satelite TV station in the possession of All Around the World Productions and was broadcast via Sky in the UK and Ireland on Canel. 373. This was a musical station that focused on performing coming UK city, grim and hip-hop tunes and made a major leap forward for bands like Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal, Chipmunk, Wretch 32, Devlin, Giggs, Skepta and N-Dubz.
AKA broadcasted 24 hrs a night and performed bands from the following genres: grass, hiphop, RnB, reggae, dance hall, afrobeat, dub step, garages and drum'n' bas. In their texts many of them have shown their allegiance to the station, e.g. in Lady Sovereign's "9 bis 5", "Channel who? O Canal U, the ones who made me big, like Katie Price's breasts!".
Others who have commented on Channels U are Kano, Ironik, Lethal Bizzle, Sway, Remi Nicole, Mr Wong and Dizzee Rascal. Scroobius Pip and Dan le sa criticized the station in their track "Fixed", as did Lowkey, who led the station's failure to innovate and take the risk.
The first Channel U Awards were presented in London in October 2005 with the first yearly Channel U Awards with a series of concerts from the under ground-playlists. Fizz TV and Channel U's holding was voluntarily liquidated in early February 2009 before being acquired by Moshroom TV. In acquiring the two stations, Moshroom TV approved that Channel U and Fizz TV should be renamed.
On 16 March 2009, the two stations were renamed AKA and Starz TV. Objectives: The station's goal is to offer the audience refreshing and exquisite entertainments and to enable the audience to express their opinion on the video through the possibility of comment. This not only gives the observer complete freedom of observation, but also allows the artist to see how humans react to their work.
Formerly Kanal UK, AKA emphasizes the crude and unmarked talents we have in the UK and it has been a success in this quest, as the release and appeal of such CD compilations as The Album.
