Initially, the airline was operating intercontinental flights in cooperation with Air France, Air India and British Airways, which together held 25 percent of Air Mauritius at that year. 9 ]:1131[10]:41 Until 1972, the business was limited to providing groundhandling and in August 1972 it began its own operation with a six-seater Piper PA-31 Navajo, rented by Air Madagascar and linking Mauritius with Rodrigues.

10 ]:41 The plane had an Air Mauritius design, but retained Malagasy certification. In April 1980 (1980-04) the airline had 414 staff and a Boeing 707-420 and Boeing 737-200 and two Twin Otters to provide a rail service to Bombay, London, Nairobi, RĂ©union, Rodrigues, Rome and Tananarive.

Possession of the firm had shifted to have the Mauritian authorities as majority shareholders (42. 5%), followed by Rogers & Co. 13 ] Air Mauritius purchased a used Boeing 707-320B in 1981. Air Mauritius and Air Madagascar began a common flight duty between Tananarive-Mauritius-Comoros-Nairobi and RĂ©union-Mauritius in November 1981 (1981-11) after a Boeing 737 was hired from Air Madagascar.

A 46-seater ATR 42 was ordered in April,[16] and Singapore was added to the flight schedule with a Boeing 707 fleet every week. Air Mauritius became a member of the African Airlines Association in June of the same year. 17 ][18] Since the Australian air traffic for Air Mauritius had not yet been cleared, a Boeing 747SP non-stop connection to Hong Kong was launched on 29 October 1989 (1989-10-29) in collaboration with Cathay Pacific.

26 ] A second A340-300 called ?Pink Pigeon?, bought directly from Airbus, was delivered by the airplane maker in October. Connections to Brussels and Cape Town began in July and November of this year. The third A340-300 from Air Mauritius, also rented by ILFC and called ?Kestrel?, was added to the ILFC A340-300s' flight schedule in April 1995 (1995-04).

During the year, the company began to trade on the Mauritius Stock Exchange. Air Mauritius's most important recent developments are presented below (as of 31 March): Torr, Jeremy (April 27, 2016).
