Devaluation of Myanmar in 2014-15 due to the rising US-Dollars
Stronger US dollars and the trading gap led to a 12.7 percent devaluation of the country, Deputy Governor Daw Khin Saw Oo of the Central Bank of Myanmar was cited at the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw meeting today. At the meeting, it presented the progress reports on the conduct of CBM's budgetary policy and actions for the 2014-15 year.
The US government's US government has seen a rise in US dollars due to balance of payments shortfalls in the course of the year. Nonetheless, the assistant Governor said that the economy was growing faster than in the preceding 2014-15 financial year. According to the statistic of the acting Governor, the economy grew from 8.4 percent in 2013-14 to 8.7 percent in 2014-15.
Meanwhile, headline rate rate was up slightly from 8.4 percent in 2013-14 to 8.7 percent in 2014-15, while the overall amount of funds in currency also went up by 20 percent at the end of the year, the acting governor said. It acknowledged, however, that CBM had to buy 30 percent of the government's public deficits in the course of the year.
By the end of the year, the Federal Reserve had licensed four state institutions, 22 retail banking institutions, 37 representations of non-German banking institutions, nine finance institutions, 241 currency exchange institutions, 15 insurers and 226 micro-finance institutions. According to the year under review, the net income of the finance subsidiaries also increased.
During the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw meeting, Minister of Electricity and Energy U Pe Zin Tun requested that the meeting approve the signing of an agreement to connect the electricity grids of the BIMSTEC nations, which would be of benefit to Myanmar. The meeting had previously adopted the proposed amendments to the Wart/Village Tract Administrative Act.
