Thanks for your feedback – I agree that I could better illustrate my points with photos specifically about what I’m talking about through the article. I tried to include the most relevant photos, but when I’m out doing street photography, I’m usually just thinking of trying to get good shots for my portfolio rather than to demonstrate an educational point. But this is something I’ll keep in mind in the future for when I’m out shooting and there are probably some photos in my archives that I could look through to include.

Hey Don, thanks for sharing. I thinks it’s a great idea to have your portfolio ready on your phone or have a small portfolio printed out (I’ve considered printing out really small booklets that I could give to people on the street if I talk to someone) that you can show to people. I think it’s a nice way to show your work, connect with people, and people can pretty instantly see that you’re doing something creative if they’ve expressed skepticism as to what you’re doing.

That’s great! I think street portraits can make for great photographs, but it’s not something that has been a focus in my street photography practice, at least up until this point.

I believe we should do street photography because it’s fulfilling and the end result is visually appealing to you as a photographer/artist. So if there’s a niche type of street photography that gives you purpose and meaning then I think you should pursue it with a passion.

I agree as well that many people are open to having their photo taken – especially if you get a chance to explain what you’re doing.

This is a dramatically downsized copy. The original is 5760×2880. Affordable 3d photography is still in its infancy unfortunately. This is done on a GoPro MAX.

@disqus_3IYyyUTR7U:disqus yes that would be it. If you ever want to enter larger ones with sponsors and bigger prizes, they usually ask for a model release from any people visible and recognizable in the photos

@darlenehildebrandt:disqus The law says that as long as you are on public property, you can still photograph anything on private property that is clearly visible to any passerby.

Darlene, I am unaware of any requirement to provide any model releases. Perhaps it is because these competitions are amongst local area camera clubs and within county fairs. Also, there is no intention for the pictures to ever be used for any commercial purposes whatsoever.

A skybox is a 360 degree panoramic photo. After processing it into 6 square panels (front, back, right, left, top, and bottom) you can use it in a 3d sim to give the appearance that you are standing in the center of a sphere. I take my to create virtual skies to surround 3d stadiums for Out of the Park Baseball.

As for not photographing even from public space to private, I was unaware of that. Valuable lesson!

@disqus_3IYyyUTR7U:disqus don’t competitions require a model release from any photos of people?

@disqus_lcDtxsZZel:disqus what is a skybox? Also technically even if you are on a public sidewalk you still cannot photograph private property and if the owner says stop you must do so

Although not always, I ask if I could take their photo explaining that I’m doing a series showing people on the street. (this is especially true if wanting to take a picture of a child). I also let them know that I may be submitting their photo in various competitions. I find that there are very few people who object and if they do, I thank them and move on.

Ring bell door, government, all in the interest of “public” safety.

I know it’s different with you or your camera to your eye.

While I can’t imagine doing that in a street setting, your advice on being open and honest with people is very important.

I was once confronted by a land owner even though I was taking the picture from the public road. I simply explained what I was doing and the bristle died right down. It helped that I was able to show some of my work to validate my explanation.

Being alone on a dusty rural road can be every bit as dangerous as in an urban environment if you aren’t cautious.

Any reason you didn’t include photos of good and bad examples of your points, to bring them to life and make it easier for us to visualize them?
