Thank you for the tutorial. My first attempt at using macro with extension tubes.

I enjoy the challenge of macro. I have some dioptre lenses and also tubes, I agree, a tripod is essential, but you can get away without one at times The photo is one I took as a ‘Something to do’ whilst on holiday, hand held, the flower was peaking out of a hedgerow. The lighting was good. I used my Canon EOS 600D
Flash not used. Focal length 55mm. (with 5x dioptre) Exposure 1/80, f 5.6. ISO 250. Matrix metering. Auto white balance, shot in RAW.
Edited in: Digital Photo Professional (Program that came with my camera), final edit in Elements 10.

I came across this article while looking into extension tubes. Terrific information.

What works for me in this image, and it started as an unintended consequence, was capturing the movements of the second and minute hands. I noticed it on a shorter exposure and decided to lower the ISO to 50, dim the lighting a bit and stretch out the exposure to 20 seconds. 70mm, F8. The illumination of the hands is enhanced by the addition of a blacklight.

This particular watch moves the hands in increments rather than a continuous sweep making it possible to capture the incremental movements.

LOL thanks Leyden! Tubes article soon I promise. I also need to do masking which I also promised. Yes that expression works here too – we have baseball. As for the the wine corks there were borrowed from someone who has a collection of macro goodies to shoot. So speaks to his taste not mine – I like both. 😉

Don’t skimp, but the sooner the better for the ext. tube piece, use as many words as it takes! I’ve been trying to get close with an EF-S 55-250 and a dedicated ‘mac’ is not in the budget any time soon.

Our rescue tiger [ Tig-grr ] was with us from ’72 to ’84, we lost him to what appeared to be some sort of brain tumor and after his passing it became apparent that I had an allergy…..

BTW, I didn’t see any used wine stoppers from a ‘white’ variety?

Thanks for ALL of your help!

Hi Darlene and Laurie, The reason, I found somewhere (I’ve been trying to find the reference), is that Live View uses the Sensor (CCD), thus the sensor is on and heating up the whole time Live view is on and as such can introduce sensor noise into the image because of the heat. So I learned to turn it off as you suggest. As far as Battery Drain I bought and aftermarket AC adapter for my Canon and it works real good when taking macros in “studio”.

@darlenehildebrandt:disqus, here is a picture I took using 20mm+12mm extension tubes on Nikon 50mm 1.8G lens. I took lots of learning from your article, earlier I used to keep a faster shutter speed with lower F-stop to get sharp image (with my less knowledge), however the pic below was clicked at much slower Shutter speed (1/10 sec), F10, ISO 200, clicked in RAW mode, camera body Nikon D90
Looking fwd to hear feedback from you.

Dr. Mukund, you may make a search on Extension tube for your camera body over net. They are easily available at any camera shop/online stores…
