@fabriziobertorino:disqus and just to be clear
1 – catalog on the internal drive
2 – images on the external

@fabriziobertorino:disqus yes always. Most internal drives are now SSD so it will always run faster that way. Constantly writing to an external with a database is also a good way to kill your external drive fast

Your suggestions for having LR catalog on the hd of the laptop and not on an external drive are for Luminar Neo as well?

I’ve started using it to simplify my backup routine. I keep my photos on a large, second drive in my desktop (not the solid state drive that runs Windows and apps), and I back up all photos and my Lightroom catalog daily to an always-attached portable USB drive, and weekly to a second USB drive that lives in my basement, in addition to automated cloud backups. Now, I’ve set up jobs in GoodSync to do all the copying automatically, and it saves all the deleted files (quite a lot, since I’ve been culling 2 years of old photos that are duplicates or not so great, to save disk space) to the History folder on the backup drive, so it’s a modified, one-way sync. Each backup is always a copy of the current Pictures folder from my desktop, plus an archive of the deleted stuff, which will get permanently deleted from History, if I don’t manually retrieve it, after a year. I even set it to automatically copy my Lightroom catalog backups whenever the second drive from the basement gets plugged in. All these settings are easily availble in GoodSync, and I found I only need to be mildly tech-savvy to deal with it all, ignoring the more advance options. I am delighted, as now I will spend much less time keeping track of which folders need backups every day and every week. Ahhh! And I learned years ago that you can never have too many backups!

@rh6194:disqus yes that is fine. You just want your backups on a different drive than your original LR catalog. Then make sure you backup your photos somewhere else as well.

Or asked more directly, is it okay to backup my catalog to the same external drive as my images are on?
