I love this article and have actually read it twice and will read it again. However, I find the photo of Winslow WITH the man at the window much more interesting to look at although I guess it could be considered more snapshot than art. The poser augments the sculpture (which I thought was the subject), the old building with the reflection is lucky composition. I thought it was intentional to me before I read your explanation.

Really helpful tips though, when I started getting closer to stuff and making it clear EXACTLY what my subject was my photos got loads and loads better.

Furthermore I don’t have a software program yet. I’ll be trying to do as the old timers were doing. Taking the best shot and share.

Ok – thanks for the explanation! Getting the right angle to include all you want in a photo can be tricky. And it does seem to be in the middle of the street sometimes. And sometimes there are obnoxious people to deal with, too! Let me know if you ever get to Copenhagen – I’ll show you some awesome places to play with angles and light!

Thanks for your comment Kinne. It was tricky to do so. We actually had to come back an hour later as that guy would not move. He was quite drunk and seemed to want us to pay him to move out of the photo. But having the sign and the truck in the shot was tricky because of where they were positioned and I had to stand in the middle of the street literally. You’ll also notice how far off the right the truck is so to get both I had to stand even farther right and then the background is the intersection and it was too busy behind it. So yes while ideally I’d have liked to do that I seem to remember it not being physically possible to get them both in the shot and not get run over or have a message in behind.

Awesome, yes it’s a great little lens. Thinking before shooting is always a good idea. 😉

Thanks Mike, fair enough on the Winslow shot. I think the closer one works better as an image because there’s so much going on in the other one you eye wanders. But as you said, to each their own which is the great thing about art.

But so much depends on the situation and personal preference. I’m with you on the typewriter, but much prefer the wider Winslow shot. IMHO, including more elements from the song works better. But to each his own.

I would have waited for the other man to move on, framed Winslow, the window reflection of the (would be) flatbed Ford and your friend with the statue “Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see…” I can see that these references are in your photo, which is fine if you’re taking a portrait of your boyfriend! I just think this is a cool location! Thanks for you tips.

I took your advice a while back and invested in a 50mm F1.8 and it is fast becoming my absolute favourite lens. Takes me back to the days of 35mm film where you had to think before shooting 🙂
