Joyce, generally speaking I don’t get model releases when traveling, there is the language barrier, the time constrains, etc. Still I can license the images for Editorial Use and that’s not a problem for publication as a release is not required.

However, in certain occasions, if I am staying in a place for longer time, I try to arrange shoots with locals either through my guide or a fixer. In those situations I always request releases as those are sort of “planned sessions”. The advantage of doing so, apart of the release is that you get more time to setup the photos and fulfill your vision. When I do that I compensate the person, even if little, I think is fair to them if they are “modeling” for me. Here are a couple of examples of arranged shots.

Joyce, I’ll let Daniel answer that and add my own comment. I personally do not get model releases for travel portraits like this for a few reasons.

#1 – I’m not selling my images as commercial stock licenses. That is the main reason you’d need one.
#2 – there is often a language barrier when traveling which makes it near impossible
#3 – I only use my images for personal and editorial/teaching purposes so I do not need a model release as long as the photos were taken in public places.

As Daniel does sell his images let’s see how he handles it.

If so, what is the best way to go about it?
