I’ve been reading and attempting to put your tips into practice so that I can walk into my trip with more skill and confidence. I was particularly intrigued but tip 2 in this article on selecting focus points. I was doing some practice this past weekend and was finding it difficult to capture small kiddos running around on my family’s farm. I was using single focus point (I didn’t even realize there was another option). When you were writing about zone, i thought “that’s what i needed!” So I attempted to set my camera up for zone focus and can’t seem to figure out how. I pulled out my manual and can’t find it in there either. Is that a newer feature on cameras? Perhaps it’s not an option on mine, I’m using a Canon EOS Rebel XT. Any thoughts?

Hi Suzijo – we’re actually considering a “print” plugin that you can just click on the page and it will do all that for you. Just looking for one that will work.

Hi Darlene,
I apologize for the delay on thanking you for the information above, I am using print friendly.com, it works awesome. Now I can print up a few more articles for my photo notebook to help me on my Photo journey. Again, thank you.

Try this: https://www.printwhatyoulike.co… – just put the URL of the article into the box, then untick “images” and it seems to do what you want.

OR here’s another one https://www.printfriendly.com which also has a google chrome extension which I might install myself!

https://chrome.google.com/webs

So just use the Chrome browser and install this for it and it will let you do that to any web page.

Is there a way I can print it so I don’t have to sit there and write it out, especially the part on the area of contract. Please help?
I have a new Nikon and I continue to learn about the setting for the different Focus settings . Just finished with Macro Focusing wow!

And yes, back-button focussing is such a pleasure compared to shutter button, and also no accidental shots anymore by that cramped finger on the shutter button while trying to keep focus, let your thumb do the fine work! Darlene, you already know this (I am sure) … your articles are so clear and informative; so much appreciated by someone new to the art of photography. I have also read articles by other photographers, some of whom you have recommended via your blog/site, and find yours are inspirational and encouraging. When I made my first attempt at photographing Xmas lights, your information was particularly helpful. Although I was nervous to share results on the discussion page I am quite pleased with the results, heaps better than any casual snaps with a point and shoot or phone camera from the past Also, your ’10 Challenges’ was a game changer for me with regard to moving forward. Perhaps not your exact words but, ‘getting out there, photographing and practice’ is definitely the road to learning … and identifying mistakes. My goal for this month is to shoot as much as possible using manual focus!

True! However if you use a lens that physically has a larger aperture like the 50mm f/1.8 as mentioned it will let more light in than say a hit lens whose max is only f/3.5.

I do it most of the time. True it isn’t the sharpest spot of the lens but when you shoot at say f/8 handheld you’ll likely end up with a slow shutter speed and camera shake – thus a blurry image so the point is sort of mute then, right? I’d rather get some sharpness and make sure my shutter speed is fast enough.

Thanks Darlene. I customized my depth of field preview button to use for continuous mode and that way I can quickly press it to switch to continuous mode if subject start moving.

It’s worth pointing out that for #4, at least on Canon cameras, the aperture is always wide open and doesn’t stop down til you actually press the shutter (or the depth of field preview button). So what matters for autofocus to work is the max aperture of the lens, not what you’re currently set at.
