Thanks! You’re right, there is finer detail with film. I’d mostly forgotten about black and white and now I find I’m returning to it more and more.

It’s a great B&W, all the tones are there.
People forget about Ansel Adams.
I used to shoot only B&W when I had a film camera, there was a finer detail.

I especially like the idea of getting out at night time and taking some shots of historic buildings and playing with some fun features like blur! My family (wife and 2 kids) tried our hand at sparkler photography NYE. The sparklers didn’t work so well, so I improvised and found 4 LED flashlights and we “wrote out” 2015 in the dark. I haven’t processed them yet but they looked cool on the LCD screen! Looking forward to doing more sparkler work in the summer months when it gets warm to add an element of “magic” to the scene!

I’m in Peru right now, just went to Machu Pichu a few weeks ago, and your pictures brought back a rush of memories. It truly is a magical place. We got up there early, before everyone else, and I saw the snowcapped andes off in the distance, with the clouds overhead. Soon the clouds came down and covered the mountains so I was one of the only ones who got to see it. I made a video there, and took some pictures, but they were nowhere near as majestic as your pictures of Machu Pichu.

Also I wanted to share, this is a picture I took of the Misti Volcano near Arequipa Peru.

I used a long exposure and a tripod to capture the brilliant sunset, and the volcano is actually smoking there in the background right beside the left cactus.

Ahh I love Peru.

Hmm, not sure then. I love b/w myself.

I took the shot last Friday evening on a cold crisp day just as the light was fading. I done both in colour & B&W. Using facebook I got a lot of comments on both. I posted it in a photography only page though which can help when making critique.

Facebook is where people comment the most but WordPress and Flckr as well. If I put out a b&w it doesn’t exist. I have deep roots in b&w so to me it’s obviously more beautiful than super-saturated colors. That’s why I thought it just may be that I’m out of step.

Hard to say. Where did you not get comments? Personally I think b/w is very graphic and can be quite dramatic.

Good job, Darlene, I feel like I’m right on schedule with your class. I shoot landmarks a LOT! I live in an historic, tourist town. I have a question for you that’s been bugging me. I often take pictures of our state capitol and will on occasion convert to black and white if it works. I noticed that last two times I did that I got NO feedback whatsoever which is very unusual. Is black and white out of favor or is this image just not noteworthy? Or perhaps because it’s not the usual facade people see. I don’t know but I rather like and I’m puzzled.

I really have a hard time approaching them and asking permission! I have taken thousands of photos of my daughter and her dance studio classmates and they and their parents seem to enjoy seeing them (I make a point not to post any that may be embarrassing–would not want that done to me), so I guess more people probably approve than disapprove…If someone asks me to take their picture, I will surely do it!

I live in SW Vermont, near Bennington, which has a number of monuments. One of my favorites is the Catamount (mountain lion) statue. It marks the location of the Catamount Tavern where the Green Mountain Boys planned their resistance to the British in the American Revolution. It is on a pleasant, tree-lined street, but I have always felt that taking a photo when the leaves were green was just a bit boring. This year I managed to time it right, and when the leaves changed, I took a number of photos using the fall colors as a background. The image that includes the statue base is pretty standard, but the leaves in the background make it special.
Susan
